BEST OF BRITISH.
I have recently been loaned a magazine "Best of British" to read, and it must have been the only mag that I have read cover  to cover, as it was so interesting.
It's all about people in the age group of our members and covers every topic you can think of when growing up. School, playing, music, sport, holidays, national service. It's a monthly publication costs £3.75 (worth every penny) if you take out an annual subscription, you save a £1.00 a copy and get it delivered free

MALTA - REUNION - UPDATE.
Thanks to all those that have contacted me showing interest. I have been putting out feelers at various agencies. One of our members who has resided in Malta for the past 30 years suggests we go in October it is not quite so hot and slightly cheaper, I was talking to him on the 2nd week of December and he was walking around in shorts and  “T” shirt.  I am looking for a minimum 4*hotel.
Anyone with comments/suggestions please contact me. I have already written a long screed to the Branch Secretary of the MALTA   R.A.F.A., giving our background and asking if they can lay on something for us should we arrive.
To date I have no further news on the RAF Lyneham closing down parade other than the date Thursday 26th May

Jim's Monthly News, Nov 2010

Over the years many members have passed on what I think has been information that would have been useful to  the membership, and  have often toyed with the idea of putting it down on paper, and today I have come up with the idea of Jim's Monthly News.  No doubt it's not going to be every ones cup of tea, and so I am sending the first copy to all those on line, if any member would like their name taken of mailing list just email me. There must be many things that other member's think of that might be of use /interest that other members might not be aware of. If any member sends me anything of interest I will see that it goes in next the Next Monthly News.
Benefits/Assistance
Members don't have to belong to military associations to qualify for financial assistance, for example one of our members needed an electric mobile scooter, he applied to the British Legion & R.A.F.B. & between them they met the total cost.
Several members who have been in hospitalized have been booked into one of the association's converlecance homes along with their wife for a break; I myself have arranged this for some of our members
We had another member who sold up and went to live in France and some years later he developed serious cancer and ended up having to stay in bed, and his wife couldn't cope. I took his case to the  British Legion, RAFB ,& SAFA, and between them, they brought him back to the UK and through the local council they arranged for him to have a senior citizens 2 bed bungalow approx a quarter of a mile from where his daughter lived, which meant she could keep an eye on them
This & That
I was quite surprised with the result of my survey on how many members were using Skype, out of all the members it appears only nine are using it.
What is Skype?. It is a means of talking to anyone anywhere in the world for nothing providing they are on Skype as well and YES IT IS FREE, your only cost is the initial lay out for a webcam which can be purchased for as little as £12, if you do not have speakers you will need a set of headphones which a relatively cheap,  and so simple to set up and if you need any assistance, you can get the children or grandchildren to sort it for you, yes it's great to sit and talk to people and see their face on your monitor at the same time. If you want to have a chat about Skype Email with a time and a date and I will ring you and we can have a chat, and I will pay for phone call.
Roadside Vehicle Assistance
Four years ago I belonged to the RAC, then I saw the Ad, join the AA for £35 and get £22 worth of Argos vouchers, and so I duly took up  their offer, and a year later and every year since the AA write and quote £55 for the next years cover, I phone them and say I can get it a lot cheaper than that and I am leaving the AA, and there and then  they quote a 50% discount and for the last 3 years all I have paid is £26 a year.
House Insurance
How many of us year after year still keep to the same company just paying whatever premium they ask for. Castle Cover specializes in home insurance for the over 50's (which means all of us). If they can't beat your current renewal quote they will give you £30, and the cover is the same as other companies, I have been with them for three years.
Buying Goods On Line
There is such a saving to be made by buying goods on line (From Reputable Company's).  I recently purchased a large Television from M&S; yes I didn't realize that they sold televisions ether, I paid £300 of the recommended price and it came with 5 year guarantee, other dealers give a one year guarantee and it costs an extra £275 for 5 years, the television was delivered in 5 days including setting it up making sure we knew how it worked and they took away all the packing. If your thinking of buying a larger Television here's a tip get a tape, and measure from where you sit to watch Television to where the Television is to be positioned, then go to Comets with tape, measure the distance from the size of Television you are thinking of purchasing this will  then give you some idea of the size or Telly you need.
AMAZON
I have been purchasing goods from this company for many years and it has been first class service. If you are an avid reader, you will probably not beat Amazons price for books, and if you prepared to wait 5 days they will send goods post free.

Can you circulate this around especially as Xmas is fast approaching -
it has been confirmed by Royal Mail. The Trading Standards Office are
making people aware of the following scam:
A card is posted through your door from a company called PDS (Parcel
Delivery Service) suggesting that they were unable to deliver a parcel
and that you need to contact them on 0906 6611911 (a Premium rate
number).
DO NOT call this number, as this is a mail scam originating from Belize.
If you call the number and you start to hear a recorded message you
will already have been billed £315 for the phone call.
If you do receive a card with these details, then please contact Royal
Mail Fraud on 020 7239 6655

AND,

Dear Customer,
Please be advised that at present there are a number of companies making cold calls implying that your computer may have been infected with a virus or has been reported by your ISP as causing problems on the Internet.
The caller generally pretends to be from a company called Windows or says that they are affiliated with Microsoft. They will try to get you to install a suite of software that will show you a number of problems on your computer. Do not under any circumstances allow them access to your computer. Once they have gained access, they can obtain any personal information held on your computer.
They will also ask for credit card details so that they can charge you for ‘repairing’ your computer..
If you receive one of these calls, please hang up.
If you persistently get these calls then report them to Ofcom.
For additional information, please read the article below as broadcast on the BBC Radio 4 on 15TH November 2010.

Jim sent  to all of us on the Internet an item from his younger days, during World War Two. Very interesting it is too.
I have started a new page, called Stories, for Jim's item in the hope that someone else would like to put something on, I know I will once I see how it goes.
